The shawl is worked flat, back and forth. Increase rows are worked at regular intervals throughout the shawl. The pattern is designed so that gauge is not important. If you choose a finer yarn, the shawl will simply be lighter and more delicate; if you choose a heavier yarn, it will be larger. The shape of the shawl remains the same, allowing you to choose how light or heavy you would like it to be.
The shawl can be worked in one color or several colors. Stripes look beautiful in the garter-stitch sections; when changing colors, work 2 rows in the same color for neat and even color changes. A contrasting color for the bind-off can also be a lovely detail.
The final size of the shawl is entirely up to you. I think it looks particularly nice to bind off after a garter-stitch section, but it also works well to bind off after a ribbed section. Just keep the proportions in mind so that all sections are approximately the same width.
